What is a campaign total budget in Google Ads?

Short answer
A campaign total budget is one amount for a campaign's whole run, set instead of an average daily budget. Google says it takes into account how much has been spent so far and adjusts spending daily to attempt to spend the total budget in the remaining days, with no daily spending limits, and you will never be charged more than your total budget.
The average daily budget works the other way. Google says that with one you will never be charged more than your daily spending limit (two times your average daily budget for most campaigns) on any particular day, or your monthly spending limit (30.4 times your average daily budget for most campaigns) in any particular month.
The choice is made once. Google says you select 'Campaign total budget' while creating a new campaign, that you can't change the budget type after a campaign is created, and that existing campaigns currently can't switch from average daily budgets to total budgets. A start or end date can be set between 3 and 90 days, and for Demand Gen and YouTube up to one year. Campaigns using a total budget aren't compatible with shared budgets.
A total budget is a spend goal, not a promise to spend. Google says that if the campaign is limited by target, the spend will still be limited, and recommends relaxing the target. Our reading: for a dated event with a fixed amount it is the cleaner tool, and a campaign that underspends its total is telling you about its target before its budget.
Nothing that moves money happens without evidence
At Riibon a bid or budget change starts from the platform's own forecast and the account's history, and no change that touches money goes live without a person signing it off. Every change is written down with what happened after it, so the next decision starts from the last one.
Ask the Riibon app what changed in your account before your numbers moved. Access starts with a short call: we look at your ads together, then run them for you or set the app up with you.
