What is a conversion cycle in Google Ads?

Melvin Salas1 min readVerified 30 September 2026

Short answer

The example Google gives of a conversion cycle is the amount of time it takes for a click to result in a conversion. Google uses it to time how long Smart Bidding can take to settle. Its learning period page says the learning period can take up to around 50 conversion events or 3 conversion cycles. Its Target ROAS page adds that after a target change the bidder will need some time to hit the new target, and to give it one to two conversion cycles.

Three of Google's own pages time things in it. The learning period page says it can take up to around 50 conversion events or 3 conversion cycles for the bid strategy to calibrate to the new objective, although it can be faster depending on the amount of conversion data present. The Target ROAS page says that when you change targets, the bidder will react immediately but will need some time to hit the new target, and to give it one to two conversion cycles. The page on the August 2026 change to target-based bid strategies says that after making budget increases you should wait one to two conversion cycles to evaluate the campaign's performance.

Google also lists the duration of your conversion cycles as one of the three factors that primarily affect how long the learning period lasts, beside the number of conversions and the bid strategy.

It follows, though Google does not put it this way, that the waits are yours to measure: on an account where people take weeks between the click and the purchase, one to two conversion cycles is weeks, not days. The date matters too. Google describes Google Ads as using click-date attribution and offers separate columns, such as All conv. (by conv. time), that report on the time the conversion occurred, so the most recent days of a click-dated window can still be filling in.

We check this on every account we run

Riibon ties Meta and Google Ads back to outcomes measured outside the platforms, payments and bookings, so the number a decision rests on is one the business would recognise. When the platform and the business disagree, we show both and say which one we trusted.

Ask the Riibon app what your own account is counting as a conversion. It is free, with no time limit and no card. Or book a call and we run it for you.
