What is cost per lead (CPL)?

Short answer

Cost per lead is ad spend divided by the number of leads it produced. In Google Ads, Google says Cost per conversion ('Cost/conv.') is calculated by dividing your total cost by the number in your 'Conversions' column, so it is your cost per lead only when the actions in that column are leads and nothing else.

Google adds that this calculation only applies to eligible interactions, like ad clicks or video ad views, so any clicks that can't be tracked for conversions are removed from the calculation.

What counts as one lead decides the number. Google's guidance on the conversion count setting is to select 'One' for leads to prevent duplicate counts from page refreshes. Our reading: counted the other way, one person can be more than one lead, and cost per lead looks better than it is.

Our reading, not any platform's: cost per lead is a price, not a result. A campaign optimising for lead submissions can lower it by finding people who fill in forms, which is not the same as finding people who buy. We report it beside the cost of a lead the CRM marks as qualified, and we act on the second.

We check this on every account we run

Riibon ties Meta and Google Ads back to outcomes measured outside the platforms, payments and bookings, so the number a decision rests on is one the business would recognise. When the platform and the business disagree, we show both and say which one we trusted.

Ask the Riibon app what your own account is counting as a conversion. It is free, with no time limit and no card. Or book a call and we run it for you.
