What is the Google tag?

Short answer

The Google tag (gtag.js) is, in Google's words, a single tag you can add to your website that allows you to use a variety of Google products and services. Instead of managing multiple tags for different Google product accounts, you can use the Google tag across your entire website and connect the tag to multiple destinations. Google notes that the global site tag (gtag.js) is now the Google tag.

Google says the tag lets you send data from your website to linked Google product destinations to help you measure the effectiveness of your website and ads, and that it is currently only accessible and configurable from Google Ads, Google Analytics 4 and Campaign Manager 360. It also says that changing settings in your Google tag will affect all associated destinations.

Its case for tagging every page is measurement. Google says that as website technologies like cookies continue to evolve due to privacy, browser and regulation changes, having high-quality, site-wide tagging across your website is important to help ensure that you're getting the most accurate measurement, and that Google products only collect data on pages where you've deployed the associated tags. In its note on cross-device conversions, Google says the share that can be recovered depends on the amount of observable data and how representative it is, and names the Google tag, consent mode and enhanced conversions as ways to improve on it.

Our reading, not Google's: because one tag feeds several destinations, a setting changed for Analytics can change what Google Ads measures too. That is worth a line in the account's change log on the day it happens, so a later shift in conversions is not blamed on a campaign.

We check this on every account we run

Riibon ties Meta and Google Ads back to outcomes measured outside the platforms, payments and bookings, so the number a decision rests on is one the business would recognise. When the platform and the business disagree, we show both and say which one we trusted.

Ask the Riibon app what your own account is counting as a conversion. Access starts with a short call: we look at your ads together, then run them for you or set the app up with you.
